Hi Birding Friends!
My name is Jess and I’m a bird nerd. I credit my love of birds as an adult to being raised in a family that spent a lot of time outdoors. My family members weren’t “birders”, but we did a lot of general nature watching, which often included birds. My parents and grandparents have always had backyard bird feeders, and I grew up knowing how to identify the basic backyard birds and use a field guide. We used to take drives around the countryside or to the lakes to look for deer, geese, turkeys, and other wildlife. Hunting and fishing were also popular pastimes for my family, and there tend to be birds in those places as well. It was normal for me to look out the windows everywhere we went and just in general to be aware of my surroundings and nature.
I developed a greater interest in birding when my husband and I moved to Kansas in 2011. Located on the central flyway, Kansas is a hotspot of birding activity, especially during migration. I’m not really sure a single event led me to a great interest in birdwatching; it kind of just happened over time. I made my first trip to Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira National Wildlife Refuge during spring shorebird migration in 2014. After that trip, I was all-in: hook, line, & sinker!
Another thing you should know about me is that I love to learn. I’m very curious, and I want to learn as much as I can about everything. I would say, second to birding, “googling” is my biggest hobby. This has made my birding experience so much greater because I love to learn about the birds, birding techniques, nature photography, and so much more.
I started this website as a way to both chronicle my birding adventures and provide resources for other birders. There is a ton of information available on the internet, but a lot of people don’t know how to find it or where to look. I hope that my site can be a compilation of many resources all in one place.
A little more about me: I am married to a wonderful husband, Hubby, and we have two beautiful sons, Big C and Little S. I’m refraining from using the real names of my family on this website for their privacy. I spend my working days as a middle school computer teacher in Northeast Kansas.
Thank you for visiting my site, and I hope you enjoy it! Please feel free to leave comments, feedback, and suggestions.
